How to: Create an exclusion dictionary to exclude words from a spell check.
Solution:
Create a text file containing the words to be excluded, save as MSSP2_EN.EXC in the MSAPPS\PROOF directory, and then resave as the main dictionary in the Program files folder.
CAUTION: Save and close any open files prior to beginning this procedure.
1) Open a new document:
a) Select the 'File' menu and select 'New...'. (The 'New' dialog box appears.)
b) Click the 'General' tab.
c) Select the 'Blank Document' icon.
d) Select the 'Document' radio button in the 'Create New' group.
e) Click 'OK'. (A blank document appears in the document window.)
2) Type the word(s) to be added to the 'Exclude' dictionary.
NOTE: Make sure only one word is typed per line.
3) Press ENTER.
4) Save the file in the same folder as other Windows dictionary files:
a) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Save As...'. (The Save As dialog box appears.)
b) Select the Windows dictionary folder from the 'Save in' drop-down list box.
NOTE: By default the dictionary files are kept in \WINDOWS\MSAPPS\PROOF.
c) Select 'Text Only' in the 'Save as type' drop-down list box.
d) Type MSSP2_EN.EXC in the 'File Name' drop-down list box.
e) Click 'Save'.
5) Save the 'Exclude' dictionary again in the same folder as the main dictionary in the Program Files folder:
a) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Save As...'. (The 'Save As' dialog box appears.)
b) Select 'C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\MICROSOFT SHARED\PROOF' from the 'Save in' list box.
NOTE: If the root drive is NOT 'C', then use whatever the root drive is in place of 'C'.
c) Click 'Save'.
6) Add the new dictionary name to the dictionary list:
a) Select the 'Tools' menu and select 'Options...'. (The 'Options' dialog box appears.)
b) Click the 'Spelling' tab.
c) Click 'Custom Dictionaries...'. (The 'Custom Dictionaries' dialog box appears.)
d) Click 'New...'. (The 'Create Custom Dictionaries' dialog box appears.)
e) Type MSSP2_EN.DIC in the 'File name' box.
f) Click 'Save'. (The 'Custom Dictionaries' dialog box appears.)
NOTE: Make sure that the option 'English (US) is selected in the 'Language' drop-down list box.
g) Click 'OK'. (A dialog box appears saying that the file is not in the correct format.)
h) Click 'Yes'. (A dialog box appears asking how the file should be saved.)
i) Click 'Text'.
7) Exit Windows.
8) Restart Windows.
9) Open the file containing the word that was included in the 'Exclude' dictionary.
10) Select the 'Tools' menu and select 'Spelling...'. (The word in the Exclude dictionary will be verified.)
